Abstract

This article analyzes the processes of semantic derivation, i.e., the metaphorization of the qualitative adjective "heavy," in modern English. Particular attention is paid to the semantic shifts in the meanings of this qualitative adjective that occur in the context of its use. The semantic transformations of a qualitative adjective are not formed in isolation, but are closely coordinated with its lexical environment. It has been determined that in the context of use, the qualitative adjective heavy functions in the following categories: abstract-evaluative categories of intensity, emotional load, and transmission of physiological characteristics. It was revealed that the qualitative adjective heavy, when metaphorized, acquires the meanings of “deep”, “gloomy”, “dense”, “intrusive”, “burdensome”, “slow”, “thick”, “continuous”, “powerful”.
