Abstract

In comparative linguistics, one of the key issues is determining the correlation between the languages being compared. Neighboring languages typically possess distinct extralinguistic characteristics that warrant study. Some of these aspects are examined here using the example of the Tajik and Uzbek languages. It is noted that native Uzbek speakers pronounce the words "se," "hafta," and "somon" as "si," "hafta," and "samon," reflecting the specific pronunciation characteristics of the sounds «e», «h», and «ǎ» in the Uzbek language. The relationship between the Tajik and Uzbek languages at the levels of phonetics and phonology has come to exhibit numerous similarities and differences, shaped by three primary factors: socio-political and historical ethnolinguistic proximity and coexistence; and the shared use of the Arabic script and alphabet by both peoples over a very long historical period—lasting until the adoption of the Latin and Cyrillic alphabets. Thirdly, the influence of Tajik and Persian languages and literature on the civilization of the Uzbek people, who adopted their best elements and utilized them to develop and refine their own language and literature.
