The article analyzes the meter of the extant poems of Kisai Marvazi, a prominent poet of the late 10th and early 11th centuries. It notes that when studying the poetry of Samanid-era poets whose divans have not survived, the poetic meter is determined based on the verse fragments themselves rather than on genre classification. The meters and forms of Kisai’s extant verses are classified as follows: hazaj – 23 poetic excerpts; ramal – 13; mutaqarib – 2; muzāri‘ – 28; mujtath – 21; khafīf – 14; munsariḥ – 7; and sarī‘ – 4. It is concluded that hazaj is the most frequently used meter, while khafīf and ramal are moderately common. The sari‘, munsarih and mutaqarib meters are rarely used. A critical analysis is presented of the article by P. Nazirova—the only study in Tajik literary scholarship dedicated to the issue in question.
