WAYS OF TRANSLATION OF TAJIK ORIGINAL POLYSEMANTIC WORDS OF “MATHNAWI MA’NAVI” INTO ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Abstract

The article examines the phenomenon of polysemanticity of lexical elements in "Mathnawi Ma’navi" by Jalaluddin Balkhi when translating the poem from Tajik into English.Based on rich factual material, it has been determined that the group of native Tajik words used in the poem expresses from two to seven meanings. An analysis of polysemantic words gives grounds to conclude that most of them have two or three meanings, and the number of words with seven meanings is insignificant. The translator of a work into English conveys such lexical elements as one element; he sometimes emphasizes the complete coincidence of the meanings of words, and sometimes notes that the translation is carried out with a partial coincidence. It is emphasized that some meanings of words are inherent to Mavlono’s individual style of presentation, since the authors of explanatory dictionaries cite only his beyts as supporting poetic material.A comparison of the meanings of words given in the Tajik-English dictionary and “Mathnawi Ma’navi” allows us to conclude that some meanings recorded in the poem Mavlono were used by the poet individually and are not found in dictionaries.
