The given article dwells on the methods of using and interpreting synonyms in historical chronicles referring to the 10th -13th centuries. Based on factual material gathered from eight Tajik and translated historical works belonging to the 10th -13th centuries, including “Tarikh-i Tabari” (The History of al-Tabari), “Tarikh-i Bukhara” (The History of Bukhara), “Tarikh-i Bayhaqi” (The History of Bayhaqi), the translation of “Tarikh-i Yamini” (The History of Yamini), and others, it is argued that, in addition to their primary purpose, historical prose texts also serve as an important source for the study of synonyms. It is noted that the authors or translators of historical works, in their narration of historical events mention the synonymity of lexical elements in 62 instances. It is emphasized that the authors of historical chronicles sometimes indicate the linguistic origin of one or both synonyms. In some cases, the ancient name of a toponym is provided. It is concluded that historical chronicles, alongside with other examples of written heritage are considered to be one of the main sources for introducing the modern reader to the linguistic observations of medieval authors.
