The article studies the spread of the Buddhist religion in ancient and medieval Sogd based on materials from written and archaeological sources. Buddhism, having appeared in India, eventually, spread to Central Asia, including Soghd. This is evidenced not only by written sources, but also by archaeological sites. The remains of Buddhist temples, coins, Buddhist iconography are examples of this. Buddhism entered into Soghd from the south, from Bactria, where during the reign of the Kushans, Buddhist teaching was at the stage of a high dawn. During the reign of the Arabs, dozens of Buddhist monasteries were destroyed. Islam took the place of the main religion, succeeded Buddhist traditions and influenced elements of local culture.
