Abstract

The article dwells on the life and creation of A.V. Starchevsky (1818-1901), writer, journalist, scientist, Russian cultural votary. It is noted that besides literary, Translatory and publicistic activities A.V. Starchevsky was seriously engaged in lexicographic work being the author of more than twenty dictionaries dealing with two, ten, fifty and one hundred languages. Starchevsky`s dictionaries, his “Satellites” and “Translators”, bilingual and polylingual, in distinction to fundamental academic productions were assigned to those specializing in practical aims. They were composed for Russian-speaking soldiers, officers and military servicemen dealing with Asian peoples whose territories had common frontiers with the Russian empire; here referred: Tajiks (Persians), Turko-Tatars, Turkmens, Kyrgyzes, Chineses and others. It is underscored that A.V. Starchevsky`s activity reflects a certain evolutionary standard of bilingual and polylingual culture in the second half of the XIX-th century. However, the cultural activity of this scientist is ignored by the explorers of the history of Tajik lexicography. The name of this lexicographer isn`t even mentioned in the Tajik Soviet Encyclopedia and the Encyclopedia of literature and art either, though out of bilingual and polylingual translatary dictionaries by A.V. Starchevsky each one is of particular importance for lexicology and deserves targeted study.
