Some Notes on the Source of the Poem Referred as “Humoy and Humoyun” by Hoju Kirmani

Abstract

The article dwells on the consideration concerned with the source of the first and most famous poem from the five fables of Khoju Kirmani (referring to the end of the XIII-th – the first half of the XIV-th century) known as “Humoy and Humoyun”. It is underscored that before Khoju in the history of Persian-Tajik literature no one wrote a separate poem on the relevant subject, although the characters Humoy and Humoyun are found several times in “Shoh-Name” by Firdawsi and in the poem entitled “Seven Beauties” by Nizomi. The author of the article lays an emphasis upon the idea that Khoju having chosen the metric mutakarib musamman mahfuz / maksur (V - / V - / V - / V- (V`) for his poem in which only epic poems were composed before him (“Shah-Name” by Firdawsi and “Iskandar-Name” by Nizomi) laid a foundation for the tradition of composing love poems with the mutakorib meter. Designing on the premise of the studies by both Tajik and foreign scholars it is convincingly proved that the basis of Khoju`s poem was one of the ancient Iranian tales refuting I.S. Stebleva`s and Z.A. Allahverdiyeva`s statement that Khoju borrowed the plot of the poem from the ancient Turkic dastan.
