Colour Gamut of Mediaeval Traditional Costume of Tajiks on the Material of Written Sources

Abstract

Proceeding from the data of written sources the author canvasses the traditional costume of Tajiks referring to the XIV-th – the XVI-th centuries. The information out of mediaeval chronicles, memoirs, biographies, travellers` diaries, heritage of the classics of literature aimed at the determination of colour gamut in Tajiks` costumes of the period explored are researched and studied. She adduces the fragments targeted at the description of clothes from the mentioned sources and certain terms associated with them extracted out of farhangs - mediaeval interpretation dictionaries in Tajik-Persian languages which helped to elicit colour preference in people`s costume of different sex, age, various strata and social groups. Mediaeval miniatures as a visual rationale of costumes colour solution and characteristics of conventional traditions connected with the suits of lords and nobility, as well as with the clothes of commoners, are presented in the article.
