The article analyzes the ethnic composition and historical processes of the Kokand Khanate based on information from the “Tarikh-i Shahrukhi” by Mulla Niyaz Muhammad Khukandi (19th century). It notes that this historical chronicle contains rare data on the ethnic makeup of the Kokand Khanate, as well as information regarding its political, economic, social, and cultural situation. Mullo Niyoz Khukandi provides information regarding the Kyrgyz, Tajiks, Kazakhs, and the Kurama, Yuz, Kirk, and Kipchak tribes—as well as the areas they inhabited. Of particular interest is the author's description of the role played by Tajiks in the political and military life of the Khanate (including the formation of military units from Tajiks hailing from the mountainous regions of Karategin, Darvaz, and Badakhshan) and the details concerning the regions inhabited by the Tajik population.
