Abstract

The article highlights the history of the emergence, formation and development of citizen journalism. In her article the author canvasses the brief overview of the opinions and concepts of foreign and domestic scientists on the issue in question. It is underscored that the main factor aimed at citizen journalism emergence and development is the rapid elevation of science and informational technology referring to the end of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st centuries, primarily the emergence of the Internet and the latest means of mass communication. It is emphasized that citizen journalism originated in America and Western countries. Most experts attribute the emergence of this kind of journalism to major events or tragedies that took place at the beginning of the century in America, Europe and Asia, during which direct witnesses began covering these events using the means of communication at their disposal. It is noted that in Tajikistan, the relevant journalism arose relatively late: approximately at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century. It was at this time that the Internet became more accessible to the population, and on the other hand, the population gained access to modern means of mass communication. The basic terms of citizen journalism are given in English with their Russian and Tajik equivalents. It is suggested that the nine terms expressing a new direction in journalism, the most commonly used are “citizen journalism” and “civic journalism”.
