The article discusses the explanation of the origin, essence and functions of “typology” in linguistic science based on the patterns of movement of the meaning of the word and the concepts of form and content as a scientific term in native and foreign linguistics. The key issues of linguistic typology and its varieties (isomorphic and allomorphic) were discussed during the analysis of the opinions of famous world-class linguists. The article also provides information about international scientific meetings on the typology of languages in the 60th of the XX century in major language centers of the former USSR and some foreign countries. Scientific conclusions of the authors on the solution of the issues of the topic of the article in seven paragraphs and the table ”classification of language connections", attributed to general connections (belonging to epistemological and structural groups) and typological connections (belonging to industry and thematic groups).
