Proceeding from historic-ethnographical sources and literature, the author considers the issues of ethnogenesis and development of ethnical processes on the contemporary territory of Sughd viloyat in the new and the newest epochs. He adduces the data in reference to population`s composition, numerosity, dynamics and inner migration. The items concerned with participation of different ethnical groups in a formation of urban quarters of Khujand and Ustrushana are analyzed; the settlement of Northern Tajikistan being included into this inventory as well. Active participation of the groups in question in enlargement and development of urban and rural settlements is vividly shown. The essence of the terms “sart” and “galcha” is briefly expounded, the author touches upon such questions as supersedence of Tajiks into the depth of mountains, rural population`s seasonal work with descending from mountains, formation of new settled units. The process of population`s ethnical formation is analyzed on concrete examples of each nokhiya included into Sughd viloyat.
