The authors have conducted a comparative analysis of one of the most complicated phenomena of English and Tajik languages – that of transformation of one part of speech into another. This article dwells, in particular, on substantivation of participles. It is common knowledge that in English there are two types of participles – present and past ones, meanwhile in Tajik we differentiate the following types: participles of present and past tenses, of present with a connotation of future, of present definite (continuous) and future tenses. As a rule, in Tajik participles possess all grammar peculiarities of nouns, such as number, definite and indefinite articles; they assume prepositions and postpositions into their structure, syntactical function of nouns are inherent in them as well. Different models of substantivation proceed from both participles too. Participle II converts mainly into nouns by different means.
