The objective of the article is a familiarization with the history of opening and activity of the National library of Tajikistan in the period of the 50-ieth of the XX-th century and a determination of its value as one of the major cultural-enlightening centres in Tajikistan. The author canvasses a brief history of the development of the major library of the republic in the post-war years of the XX-th century when Soviet Tajikistan alongside with other Soviet republics was developing rapidly. The history in regard to the construction of the major library of Tajikistan and its removal to the big spacious edifice in 1954 are represented; the latter had a huge book repository and multitude of specialized reading halls which were served by the officers of specialized subdivisions of the library. Designing on the premises of the study and generalization concerned with archive materials, published works and other sources the author of the article investigates completely the history of the National library of Tajikistan and its versatile activities as well.
