New Data About the first Written Mentioning of the Toponym of “Khujand”

Abstract

In spite of rather plentiful researches on the history of Khujand conducted in the past by Soviet, Tajik and Russian historians the issue concerned with the origin of this toponym remains controversial. The version moved by Russian Orientalist Andrey Yevlampiyevich Madgi at the end of the 1940-ies is of a certain interest as it is based on the existence of the state of yuedgis on the territory of Northern Tajikistan which enjoyed constant economy ties and diplomatic relations with the Tyans` Chinese dynasty (618 – 907). A. Ye. Madgi`s biography is briefly expounded, his scientific interests are elucidated with an inclusion of his contribution into history and linguistics; the author of the article adduces the fragments from the scientist`s work “. The first Mentionings of Kodzhent - Town Name in written monuments” extracted from the scholar`s personal archive; this scientific production being never published beforehand.
