PECULIARITIES OF GAZELS-RESPONCES (ISTIKBOL) OF VAKIF LOHURI TO THE GAZELS OF NAZIR NISHOPURI

Abstract

The article presents an analysis of the peculiarities inherent in composition of gazels-responses (istikbol) or imitations (nazira) given by Vakif Lohuri to the gazels of Nazir Nishopuri, one of the outstanding representatives of Indian style. The textological analysis of the gazels in question is effectuated with a use of several divans of both poets, the formers being manuscript lists. It is established that Vakif`s manuscripts contain two gazels, some beyts being reiterated in them. However, on the basis of makt – the last distich of gazels – one can come to the conclusion that one gazel is written to the response of Naziri`s gazel, but another one to that of Soib Tabrizi. Proceeding from this fact, the author makes an inference running to the effect that, most probably, Vakif either composed two separate gazels or edited one gazel having brought addenda into its text. It is underscored that a final conclusion related to this issue can be made by the way of thorough study of other manuscripts from Vakif`s divan. Notwithstanding the fact that Vakif included a beyt from Saib`s poem into the text of the gazel, both Vakif`s gazel and the one of Saib`s are a response (istikbol) to Nazir Nishopuri`s gazel. Designing on the premise of tazmins and imitations (nazira) following Naziri`s gazels the conclusion is made that in his creation Vakif proceeded from Nazir Nishopuri`s poetic style.
