This article is devoted to semantic changes of words in the English and Tajik languages. It is noteworthy that the problem of the meaning of the words is one of the vital aspects of modern semasiology. The article reveals the semantic peculiarities of some English and Tajik words. Particular attention is paid to the main ways of change of meaning. We came to the conclusion that the ways of change of meaning are more various in the Tajik language that can be proved by given examples. As for the English language the most productive ways are metonymy and metaphor, though metonymy appeared to be more productive; the statement being proved by numerous examples.
