Proceeding from the sources and scientific literature of diverse slants the author of the article dwells on the evolution of the ancient agrarian Navruz-holiday celebrated by Tajiks. In reference to the Navruz birth he analyzes the opinions of such mediaeval authors, as A. Beruni, Omar Khayyam, Kisravi and others. The attitude of Islam to the Navruz- holiday is given an assessment. It is asserted that the Tajik people celebrated Navruz following genuinely folk rites and traditions which not infrequently contradicted radically the spirit of Islam. The agrarian character of Navruz is disclosed. The data concerned with the traditions of Navruz-holiday, rites and rituals observed by the population of such cities as Bukhara and Khujand are generalized. The author points to the fact that celebration of Navruz was always a peculiar demonstration of the efflorescence of agriculture, handicrafts, art and physical strength. The idea of Navruz being the holiday of the good, unity and harmonу with nature is emphasized especially.
